Safety First!!!!

ALWAYS WEAR A GLOVE AND THUMB GUARD!!!!!

When I started carving, I hated wearing my glove. It made my grip slippery. So slippery that on more than one occassion a carving that was held too tight, went flying across the room. I didn't mind the knicks, and I did mind my carvings taking flight- so I decided to not wear the glove. One day, I learned the hard way that I needed the glove. I sliced the very tip of my index finger off while carving. Needless to say it hurt like heck. Thankfully it was only a sliver and it healed. I only have a faint scar as a reminder. Once I started carving regularly with the glove, the glove got broken in and no more slippage.
I got compliance after awhile and stopped wearing my glove if I was "only going to do a few cuts." After stabbing myself with a v tool and having trouble stopping the blood I am again ALWAYS putting on the glove. So no matter how long or short you plan to carve, please learn from me and wear your glove.

Bandsaw Safety
If you are serious about carving a bandsaw is a must.
